Life's Snap Shots
Another weeks bites the dust! It is incredible how fast time is flying right now! So what did I do last week?

  • Saturday the bf and I were planning on going to a local food festival. We were so excited to go! They promised all sorts of food trucks and music and so much fun. We were about to go when we noticed that our youngest kitty was not walking very well and he also displayed some labored breathing. As a safety precaution we took him to the vet. Unfortunately he had a lot of pain in his left hind leg, and the vet told us that he probably had an infection in there. He was given a shot of antibiotics and a painkiller and luckily we could take him home again. He had a similar infection a couple of weeks ago so this time round we are really going to make sure he stays inside for at least a week, until he is fully healthy again. Right now he is slowly becoming his normal, healthy self again! Luckily it was not something major, because he had as scared for a moment!
  • New Girl season 3 is on Netflix! 28304Finally.. I waited for so long to watch it. I blasted through season 1 and 2 about 8 months ago and then I had to wait. And wait. And do so more waiting. Finally my sister texted me that it was online. So far I have only let myself watch 1 episode because I know I will just get sucked in until the end of the season. I am also watching season 2 of Criminal Minds which I am about halfway through :).
  • My first essay was due today and I am happy to report that I was finished on time! I have such problems with time-management when it comes to assignments for school. Well, it is more that I never want to work on them. At the beginning of this semester I vowed to change my ways and start on time. I am really glad that I did. It feels so much better to finish with time to spare, rather than trying to wing it or come up with an excuse for why I haven’t finished. I hope to get this going all semester. Fingers crossed.
  • I want to read 15 books this month so I really got to push myself this week. I have been eying a beautiful hardback bind up of The Giver Quartet by Lois Lowry, and I promised myself that if I read 5 books this week and do all my schoolwork, I can buy it. It is just so gorgeous :). I also really like the individual hardback editions but they are significantly more expensive. To not break the bank entirely I settled on the hardback bind-up. 9780544340978Ain’t it pretty? ❤

Q: What book is on your next to buy list?

Life's Snap Shots

Books are big part of my life. I love them! But there is more to my life than just books. Since I would like to share more than just books and reviews this is going to be a weekly feature, on Monday, in which I share some fun things and facts of the last week or things that are currently happening in my life. Welcome to the very first Life’s Snapshots!

  • Another week has flown by! It is unbelievable how fast time is going. The first two weeks of class are already over. Only 5 more weeks until I have 3 reading weeks. I have only 1 assignment due in those 3 weeks which means I basically have 3 weeks off! Super nice :).
  • Last weekend, a friend and I went to a local market. We had never been there, as it is apparently a once a month thing. They had all kinds of local food products, produced within 50 kilometers of the city I live in. I saw lots of great produce I really want to eat but it was all (obviously) a little bit more expensive that store bought products. I went for a small cheese wheel and some eggs. The man who sold them to me said that I would probably never eat other eggs ever again. I’ll have to wait and see if that is true ;).
  • Last Friday my bf and I got a chance to visit some of our friends that have moved away over the summer. All three of them have started new studies in a different city, luckily all in the same city or visiting them would have been hard! We saw their apartments and got the chance to catch up!
  • I have not been feeling all that well the last two days. I’ve been drinking lots of tea though and I have just spend some time in my bed reading. Hopefully I will feel better soon! Luckily one of our kitties want to cuddle all the time <3.
  • I am currently reading a super interesting book called Born in Blood and Fire, A Concise History of Latin America. It is required reading for one of my classes but it is written in a really engaging way. If you want to read something straightforward about the history of Latin America, read that book :).  8930010
  • I am researching some options for when I finish my BA American Studies in July next year. I am considering to study abroad, possibly in the UK. I have always dreamed about living somewhere else. I would like to do some literary related studies, preferably an undergraduate program. I have seen some great English & American Literature programs, so maybe I can make that happen. Fingers crossed!

I should really try to make some more pictures next week!

What have you been up to this week?

Life's Snap Shots

Its been some time. Here’s what I was up to the last weeks:

  • Uni started last week. The first week was kind of boring. I am in my last year of my BA American Studies and the first week is always introductions and the like. I was glad that week was over. Hopefully it gets better this week ;).
  • My younger sister moved into her own place. She has a room in a enormous building where only students live. She has her own kitchen, bathroom and everything. Basically a little house! She started Uni last week, so she’ll be living there for 3 years. She is very excited to life on her own! I visited her last Friday to see the place and it feels really homey :). We spend the evening chatting and the next day my parents stopped by to finish up some of the furniture assembly. I am glad she has now settled in!
  • I trying to get more creative. Last week I was browsing on of my local stores and found a 1 euro cross stitch project. I have never ever done cross stitching before so it was cool to try out. I am hooked now! When, last Friday, I saw more projects in the store, I decided to buy one. It is a pattern of an owl and I hope to cross stitch it onto a pillow. It will be a fun project to make the coming weeks :).
  • Yesterday I went to a bookexpo with my youngest sister who, just like me, is a massive book fan. It was basically a giant discounted book sale with all new books. Of course there were more Dutch books than English but still I was really surprised with the selection! I found some really bargains. Most books I picked up where 2 euros/3 dollars. So really cheap :). There were also loads of craft supplies so if I get more into crafting I can get my supplies there for a discount. The event was free to visit so that was a huge plus too. Since it is traveling expo it hosts an event each month. End of October there is one near me again so I hope I am able to go there then :). The majority of the books is still at my parents home so I will do a stacking the shelves/haul post later this week!
  • Right now I am going back to my required reading for tonight’s class. It a course on the history of Latin America with a focus on Mexico. Today we are going to talk about the Spanish Conquest. Super interesting! Flag_of_Mexico_1917

  • Yes, I am back home again :D. Not that I have been away that long but still, I always miss my bf and kitties when I am gone.
  • Basically the only thing I’ve been doing last week was reading on Monday through Friday and then I decided to take a reading break last weekend, because Bout of Books 11 started this morning! The break was good, I felt extra motivated to read a lot this morning! I decided to pick up a game I had bought a couple of weeks ago that I still hadn’t touched yet: Bioshock. It is basically a first-person shooter that is set in this Utopian underwater city called Rapture. It is a really cool game so far, but it is creepy at times, when enemies come out of nowhere. Bioshock CoverSince I still have two weeks off from school, I think I am going to continue my reading/gaming spree this week. I’ll just set quota times for both because else I know I will be just gaming. Once I get sucked into a game I am lost cause.
  • Last week was introduction week for new students in my city. I did not participate because I have been going to Uni here for 4 years but every year thousands of new people come here to experience a week of partying. Friday night was the last night and in the street where I live, a student organization is located. During the night there was no noise but when I woke up at 8 ‘o clock in the morning the bass was audible through 8 walls. There were still people partying at 11 ‘o clock. In the morning. Drinking beer. I was just amazed (and tiny bit annoyed :P) by the amount of beer that they consumed. I was however very happy that the student organization cleaned up all the trash. Kudos for them!
  • I started watching The Last Song after finishing the audio book last week but I am not a massive fan of Miley Cyrus. I do like the chemistry between her and Liam Hemsworth (which is obvious, since there were married), but there were just so many alterations in the screenplay. I don’t know. I watched about 40 minutes and haven’t watched the rest yet. I will watch it but, no. Don’t like it that much.

This was basically it. I don’t do a whole lot when I don’t have school. I try to cherish my free time because I have no idea how busy I am going to be when the new semester starts. When you’re reading this I am try to run at the gym, so which my luck!!

Q: Does your hometown/city/college city have an intro-week for students?

Since I would like to share more than just books and reviews this is going to be a weekly feature, on Monday, in which I share some fun things and facts of the last week or things that are currently happening in my life.

  • I am done with working. I was supposed to be working for two full weeks but the berries were ripe very early this year. This means that there not any left to pick. I worked 6 days and made a decent amount of money. Although I would have liked to earned more, it is fine like this. My back was beginning to hurt from the akward position on the benches.
  • I won two more giveaway’s! All of a sudden is going like crazy. Both are ebook’s that I will get sent later, so you’ll see them show-up in a ‘Stacking the Shelves’ post later in the month.
  • I am missing my kitties and bf more and more everyday. It is nice to live with my parents for a bit again. I am not complaining that my mom cooks dinner and washing my clothes but I will be happy to return home again Wednesday. Although done with working I decided to stay for a couple of days longer so that I have some time to spend with my younger sisters. And luckily my bf keeps me updated about the kitties. At least once a day he sends majestic pictures like this:
IMG_2845[1]Fenix is just such a pretty kitty <3.
  • Last weekend was so much fun! On Saturday my aunt and uncle came to visit and my parents were taking them out to dinner. I have two younger sisters and were not going to stay behind! We made reservations at another restaurant, a greek restaurant, that serves delicious meat dishes. We started with some Ouzo, a strong liquorice like drink, and had the most amazing food afterwards. We all took a starter. My choice was this platter with bread and dips and some ham:
IMG_2850[1]We only had two main courses, because we are not very big eaters. It was fun to really get to talk to my sisters. We don’t often do things with the three of us :).
  • Sunday evening I finally went to see The Fault in our Stars in the cinema. I went with my mom and sisters, while my father decided that golf was way more important to watch, lol. The movie released about a month ago here but I promised my youngest sister that I would see it with her and now we finally had time together. Despite knowing what was going to happen it was still a really well-done movie. All four of us sat there bawling our eyes out. I will review the movie later this week :).
  • I am currently finished Season 1 of Doctor Who, which took me a long time to get into and Season 3 of 19 Kids & Counting, which is just a guilty pleasure. Sporadically I also watched some episodes of Gossip Girl, S3, and The Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, which really reminds me of my youth!

And that was it for this week! What was the last movie you saw in the cinema? Or do you have some other movie recommendations?

Since I would like to share more than just books and reviews this is going to be a weekly feature, on Monday, in which I share some fun things and facts of the last week or things that are currently happening in my life.

  • I WON MY FIRST GIVEAWAY! I still can’t believe it, as I never win anything. I participated in a Raffle copter for Anne Tidbits’ book Carrier and I won a t-shirt! I had already added it to my wishlist but now if just bought the book rightaway. Argh, I am so excited!
  • Today I’ll be starting work again! I have been without a job since November 2013. For a long time I could manage without, as in the Netherlands students get money from the government. However, you are only entitled to four years regardless of how far you have progressed in your studies. Next month I will receive my last payment and in order to have some money to pay my bills and food in September I’ll be working fulltime for the next two weeks picking berries. It is really the best job you can get in summer, because my wage depends on how much I pick. Which means the more I pick, the more money I am getting paid. The days will be long and it is really boring work but I can make enough money to last for a while.
  • I am staying with my parents now as this job is near where they live. So yesterday I packed for two weeks and caught a train to their house. IMG_2830[1]My kitty Bakso did not agree. I think he knows what is going to happen when a suitcase comes out. They know that one or both of us are going to leave. He tried to come with me by snuggling in my suitcase. Unfortunately he cannot come along :(.
  • My boyfriend’s birthday was last week! He turned 26, on 31st July, which means that he shares a birthday with Harry Potter! We celebrated with friends and family by having a bbq. Our garden is just really small and we had barely enough space to fit everyone outside but we managed. Just as we sat down it began to rain though, that was a bummer but luckily it did not really last long. We had hung some lights outside and we were able to enjoy the rest of the night with drinks and nice food.
  • Currently reading: One for the Money by Janet Evanonvitch, Voyager by Diane Gabaldon and Second Chance Summer by Morgan Matson. I am currently listening to the audiobook of Persuasion by Jane Austen on my phone.

Q: What are you currently reading?

  • Our youngest kitty, Bakso, managed to scare the life out of us again. Yesterday he stayed out long, not responding to our calls. I even walked around the neighborhood a couple of times to see if I could find him. When he finally did come home, he was very slow to respond and breathing abnormally fast. We took no risk and called the vet who asked us to come by. Naturally the minute we put him in the cat carrier his breathing returned to normal. To be sure we went to the vet anyway. Luckily he only has a little fever, so the vet gave him an injection and some pills. The downside for him is that he cannot go outside for a couple of days and he does not agree. He has been meowing like crazy today. But luckily he is back to his old self again :). IMG_2804[1]
  • I just finished my seventh series this year. I have some many first books of series on my shelf so I vowed at the beginning of this year to finish some. So far it has been really good :). If I keep this up I can hopefully finish 12 in total. That would be awesome! I’ve finished:
    (1) Divergent trilogy by Veronica Roth
    (2) Percy Jackson & Olympians series by Rick Riordan
    (3) Incarceron duology by Catherine Fisher
    (4) Delirium trilogy by Lauren Oliver
    (5) Legend trilogy by Marie Lu
    (6) Under the Never Sky trilogy by Veronica Rossi
    (7) Slated trilogy by Teri Terry
  • I don’t really like cooking that much. However, I have been trying to make an effort to cook more often instead of just relying on boxed meals or my boyfriend’s cooking. Some things are horrible but others turn out to be really great. Yesterday we had a delicious spaghetti with a ricotta cheese sauce and some bacon. Earlier in the week we had a really nice caesar salad. It was jummie!
    IMG_2800[1]
  • I’ve been sorting out my courses for the coming semester of university. I was a mess. I still need about 85 credits this year to get my Bachelor’s degree in American Studies. Since I wanted them to be evenly spread throughout the year I had some difficulties finding good ones. Unfortunately, there was one course I really wanted to do, called War & Peace, but that course is not longer taught :(. It seems that I have unrolled for all the right courses now but I still need to have them approved by the exam board via our studyadvisor. Super fun to find out that our studyadvisor had quit and there is no new one yet. When I called the Student Office I was directed to email someone for information only to get an email back that she is out of office until August 19th. Seriously, those people can drive you crazy. Luckily I have a month left to make sure everything is approved but still, sooner would be better than later!
  • For the rest of the week I really just did nothing. I mainly hung around a lot, watching some tv (Sleepy Hollow, anyone?) and read some books. I am not working currently and obviously uni has not started yet. I am kinda bored at times but once the new semester stars I’ll be wishing it was vacation again ;).

Q. This was my week! Did you do anything fun last week? Tell me about it in the comments :)!

  • I am back home. It was very unexpected to say the least because we had not planned on coming home for at least a couple of days. Last Thursday we decided we wanted to go someplace else and instead of going farther south we opted of going to Antwerp in Belgium to stay a couple days. When we arrived, we contacted some campsites and they were all fully booked. We were less than an hour away from home and we were so tired so we just decided to drive to my parents house. All in all we had an 11 day vacation instead of 15/16 days but I am quite happy to be home. We went camping for the first time so in hindsight it was a good time to go home. We’ll probably go on a minibreak at the end of August to get some extra vacation in before the next semester begins!
  • My younger sister is staying with me right now. It is awesome to have her here :). I have two younger sisters, aged 20 and 18. The eldest does not come over a lot so it is perfect to have her here for a couple of days. I don’t know how long she’ll be staying but we are going to do fun things!
  • The last place we visited befor heading home was Avignon. Avignon is most famous for its bridge (now only 4 pillars are left standing!) and its Pope Palace. In the 14th 9 popes were seated in Avignon rather than in Rome. For their benefit they constructed a large palace which is now on the UNESCO World Heritage list. It is absolutely stunning and one of the most beautiful places I’ve ever seen! I wish I could travel back in time and see it in all its splendour.
DSC05956This picture does certainly not do it justice so if you’re every nearby you should visit it because it is well worth it!
  • I loved this vacation with my boyfriend. We decided to just do everything we wanted to and we would just go home when the vacation fund was empty. We had delicious food and we did such fun things! Because we went home earlier we even have money left over 🙂
    DSC05682
  • Now I am looking forward to an evening of reading. The boyfriend and my sister are going to movies and I plan on finishing A Short History of Nearly Everything by Bill Bryson, which I started in March 2013. I know, it is an utter shame. It is non-fiction though we makes a little less ridiculous.. I have some other non-fiction books lined up and I am looking forward to those. I am also reading Voyager, the third book in the Outlander series which I really quite like. I need to read the books closer together though. I noticed that I forgot a lot of what happened in book 1/2..

So this was my week! What have you been up to?

Since I would like to share more than just books and reviews this is going to be a weekly feature, on Monday, in which I share some fun things and facts of the last week or things that are currently happening in my life.

  • The Provence is really as pretty as the picture I pulled from the Lonely Planet in last week’s Life’s Snapshots.DSC05539It is hilly and green and abundant and just plain gorgeous. There are fields of lavender and grapes everywhere and the little town seemed to be glued to the hills. Resulting in some pretty steep climbs. I am quite sure I have muscled legs when we get back.
  • Most French drivers have never heard of a turning signal at all. Not very convenient because Route National is riddled with roundabouts.. Luckily they are not as crazy as some Italian drivers!
  • Yesterday we went to a Crocodile farm. Not knowing what to expect I was surprised to discover a basin chock full of crocodiles. They were everywhere, laying on top of one another in big piles, eerily lifeless. Randomly counting a pile I already got to 57 but when I asked one of the staff members how many there actually were in the basin we were speechless. A grand total of 335 Nile Crocodiles, all from the same nest, so brothers and sisters. Never have I ever seen so much crocs in one place (and yes, I’ve been to Florida!) and I hope to never encounter so many in the wild!
  • Camping has been a blast so far. My boyfriend is quite new to camping so I was not quite sure if he was really going to like it. I’ve been camping for some years with my parents but they have always travelled with a caravan and we are now using a tent. Quite a difference in comfort. Camping is, however, totally worth repeating. I sleep like a baby at night and it is just so much cheaper that hotels. If we had been staying in hotels we would not be able to afford a second week, let alone a third!
  • If you are ever planning on traveling to the Provence and then in particular to the Vaucluse department I would recommend you visit Roussillon. The little town is known for its former ochre quarries. Consequently the picturesque little town is colored orange and a beautiful gem. Even more impressive is to take a walk in the former quarry, where two paths have been set out.DSC05602It was beautiful!

This was my week! What have you been up to?

  • Today has been a super busy day. I left my house this morning to go to my parents to pack up the car because they boyfriend and I are leaving for Southern France tomorrow! We are going to the provence and hopefully the lavender is in full bloom. Doesn’t this look amazing?

It will be quiet on the blog  the coming weeks unless I have wifi..

  • Yesterday, I finished a reread of one of my favorite childhood authors: Het Helse Paradijs by Thea Beckman. I considered doing a review, but unfortunately it has never been translated to English so I seems kind of useless. I did, however, very much enjoy this reread because I did not remember a whole lot of this book! I will be picking up the last book in the trilogy soon :).
  • I am a huge fan of the World Cup! I have literally watched every single game (which took away some precious reading time..) and I am super happy that my country, the Netherlands, now got through to the last 4. The semi-final will be played on Wednesday, so we have to find a French bar to support our country!
  • I am going to miss my furballs immensly. We have two kitties: Bakso, who is 1, and Fenix, who is 3. IMG_2139[1]I am going to enjoy the holiday but I will be happy when I get back to these happy faces!
  • Last week my mom came to visit me. I love it when she comes by. My parents live 200 km away, which is not a lot for some but a big distance in such a small country as mine. We enjoyed the sunshine and it snatched some last minute summer clothes in the sale. I always seem to find the best things when I am not searching for anything new 🙂

This was my week! What have you been up to?
